Jamb Ready To Release The Names Of Successful Students Wrote Jamb

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it will soon commence the uploading names of candidates who have been offered admission into tertiary institution on their website.

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

According to him, the board will ensure that Nigerian children are not unjustly denied admission in any institution of their choice.
He said that the names of candidates that had satisfactorily met the admission rules and regulations of the institutions and that of the Federal Government would be uploaded soon.

“We have just concluded a five-day Technical Committee meeting on Admission that started on Aug. 22 at the Bayero University Kano.

“A lot was deliberated upon and at the end everything came out successful.

“We have ensured that the admissions are done in line with the set rules and regulations as provided by the Federal Government and the various institutions.

“We are aware that the function of admission of candidates is solely the job of the Senates of institutions and what we do as a board is to see the guidelines used in admitting the candidates and ensure ratification.

“We are passionate about ensuring that no candidate that meets any of the admission rules and guidelines as provided by both the institution and government is denied admission for whatever reason,’’ he said.
The Registrar of the board, Prof.
Ishaq Oloyede, had at the opening of the meeting said that admissions would be carried out based on guidelines approved for each institution by their respective proprietors.

He also said that preference expressed for the institutions and courses by the candidates would also be followed.

Alinko Dangote Reveals Nigeria's First Fintech Bank.

It was a celebration galore on Monday, August 15th, 2016 when President of the Dangote Group and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote led other dignitaries to flag off Nigeria’s first full-fledged technology bank, SunTrust Bank.

SunTrust Bank is the first regional bank to receive a new license by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) since 2001 and the first full-fledged financial technology bank in Nigeria.

The Bank is the first commercial bank that runs minimal branches and focuses on electronic channels by offering telephone, mobile and internet banking services.

According to Dangote who chaired the opening ceremony at the Bank’s headquarter in Lagos, Fintech Bank is a welcome development in this era of cashless economy.

He emphasized that SunTrust Bank will help the country harness its potential in the digital world.
He explained further that technology-driven platform will distinguish the bank and make her the most cost-effective bank in the country with fewer personnel and attendant lower overhead cost. In his words:

“SunTrust bank has elements that appeal to me in its Fintech strategy driven by its focus on technology. SunTrust has recognized that the old model of business expansion via a network of expensive branch premises is obsolete. What you need now is to sit down at home and do your banking transactions thereby saving money and time.”Dangote commended the board, management and staff of the bank for their courage in taking the bold step at a time when “banks all over the world are facing multiple challenges and headwinds” and noted that the Bank’s focus will drive it to success.

Former governor of Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje, in his remarks at the unveiling ceremony, noted that the emergence of the bank during the implementation of the change agenda would contribute immensely to the rebirth of the Nigerian economy.

He urged the Bank to ensure that it is committed to the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises in the country, and to also support the big companies as part of its contribution to the growth of the Nigerian economy.

The Obi of Onitsha, HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe applauded the Bank, stating that the present cost of running banks in the country is high and ifthe Bank can bring it down; they will succeed.

“It is uncommon courage to go into business now that everyone is going out and it takes triple courage to go into banking business. However, the situation in the country is full of opportunities for those that can see beyond the present.”

On his own part, the Oba of Lagos, His Highness Oba Rilwan Akiolu, urged the management of the bank to put the interest of the country and the masses first in all its dealings, and to distance itself from the fraud and insider abuse that is prevalent in the Nigerian financial industry.

Chairman of SunTrust Bank, Charles Onyema Ugboko, explained that the bank will use technology to drive the financial inclusion goal of the CBN, saying the Bank’s target is to bring financial services to 40 million unbanked Nigerians.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank, Muhammad Jibrin, noted that with over 90 per cent of financial services being executed electronically, banking had moved from physical branches to a technology-driven sector.

“Most customers of tomorrow will not be the ones that go to the banking hall, so we need to be able to respond positively to the needs and expectations of the customers of tomorrow, and that is at the heart of our vision and strategy as tomorrow’s bank today,” he said.Dignitaries at the event were the president of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr Nike Akande; deputy national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Lawal Shu’aibu; former MD of AMCON, Mustapha Chike-Obi; former chairman of the EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; former MD of Ecobank, Jubril Aku, and the CEO of Nigeria Mortgage Refinancing Company, Professor Charles Iyangete.

Others on the long list of dignitaries included former MD of First Bank, Bisi Onosanya; APC national legal adviser, Dr Muiz Banire; the Lagos branch controller of the CBN, Mr James Iyari, who stood in for his boss, as well as former minister of housing, Ama Pepple, among other eminent personalities.

[News]_German Mayor Fires Refugee Project Intern For Wearing Islamic Headscarf

A Palestinian who was hired to work as an intern on a refugee project was fired by a town hall this week because she wouldn’t take off her headscarf.
Mayor Elisabeth Herzog-von der Heide of the town Luckenwalde, in Brandeburg, fired an intern after one day because she would not take off her headscarf.
“The Islamic headscarf is a means of expressing a religious worldview,” Herzog-von der Heide said on Wednesday.
The mayor said that therefore, wearing a headscarf would violate the neutrality of the town hall, where crucifixes are also not allowed.
The Palestinian woman, 48, had been hired for a project called “Perspectives for Refugees” and was set to work for six weeks.
The woman said that she did not want to remove the headscarf in the presence of men, and therefore Herzog-von der Heide said they would not be able to offer her a suitable working environment.
She added that it would have been better to clarify this policy with the intern before hiring her, and the town hall would proceed this way in the future.
A representative from the state parliament and Angela Merkel’s conservative CDU party, Sven Petke, criticized the Social Democrat (SPD) mayor.
“There is no legal basis for this decision,” Petke said, noting that the German Constitutional Court had ruled that personal beliefs and their connection to certain items of clothing should not be objectionable.
“It is something different than a crucifix on the wall.”
But members of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party praised the decision to dismiss the intern.
“If the cross is not permitted in the rooms of the town hall, then there should not be special treatment for Muslims,” said AfD state parliament representative Thomas Jung.
“The mayor deserves respect and not scolding for her uncomfortable decision.”
The debate about religious attire
Wearing a headscarf to work, especially in legal or public sector work, has been hotly debated in recent years across Germany
Germany’s Constitutional Court ruled last year that blanket bans on teachers wearing headscarves were “constitutionally limiting”.
A young lawyer in Bavaria won a victory at the end of June when the court sided with her that she would be able to wear a headscarf while performing legal duties. The judge stated that there was no legal grounds for denying her religious and educational freedom.
But more recently two major judges associations have said that they are in favour of banning headscarves in court.
The case of the intern in Luckenwalde also comes as Germany is currently considering a ban on the burqa in certain places amid concerns about integration. Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said last week that he would be in favour of a partial ban on the full-body veil.

[₦ews]_British woman dies in Australian ‘Allahu Akbar’ stabbing

A young British woman died and a man was critically injured when a French national allegedly stabbed three people while saying “Allahu Akbar” at an Australian backpacker’s hostel, police said Wednesday.

Police are investigating the murder, which occurred late Tuesday in Home Hill, a rural town south of Townsville in far north Queensland state, but could not say whether the alleged attacker had been radicalised.

The motivations behind the stabbings, which left a 30-year-old British man in a critical condition and a local man with non-life threatening injuries, were still unknown, Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said.
“Initial inquiries indicate that comments which may be construed of being of an extremist nature were made by the alleged offender,” he said.
It is alleged that the suspect used the phrase ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attack and when arrested by police, he said.
“While this information will be factored into the investigation we are not ruling out any motivations at this stage, whether they be political or criminal,” he added.
Gollschewski said investigators would also consider whether mental health or drug misuse were factors in the incident in which a dog was also fatally injured.
Police said the Frenchman, who had been in Australia since March, allegedly said “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) both during the attack and his arrest, which were reportedly witnessed by about 30 people at the hostel.
When asked if the 29-year-old had links to the so-called Islamic State group, Gollschewski said “no” and added that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
“At this stage there’s no indications… other than the fact he was acting alone,” Australian Federal Police Commander Sharon Cowden added at the same press conference.
“It is a shocking incident and the community should remain vigilant. He was lawfully in Australia and at this stage he is not known to any authorities.”
— Extremism concerns —
Canberra has been increasingly concerned about extremism in the country, and in particular about home-grown radicalisation, and raised the terror threat alert level to high in September 2014.
Authorities have conducted a series of counter-terrorism raids in various cities, while the government has passed new national security laws.
Police said that the British woman’s family had been contacted, as had the relatives of the 30-year-old British man who was taken to Townsville Base Hospital in a critical condition.
“We are working with local authorities and providing support to the families of a British national who was killed and another critically injured in an incident in Australia,” a spokesman for Britain’s Foreign Office said.
“Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time”.
A 46-year-old Australian man injured in the incident sustained non-life threatening injuries and has since been released from hospital.
Police have yet to lay charges against the French man who was taken into custody at the scene and since transported to hospital for treatment to what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries sustained in this incident.
“This is not about race or religion. It is individual criminal behaviour,” Gollschewski said.
Police did not name the deceased woman, but local media reported that she had been working in a bar on Queensland’s Gold Coast and had recently swapped over to farming work to extend her working holiday visa.

[News]_Fashola Installs Japanese 1.2MW Solar Power Supply Donation To Nigeria [photos]

Babatunde Fashola, minister of power, works and housing, on Tuesday commissioned a 1.2 megawatts (MW) solar power plant donated to Nigeria by the Japanese government. Fashola, who is working on raising Nigeria’s power profile through various energy mixes, inspected the plant at Lower Usama, Bwari And Also The Federal Capital Abuja.

“We want to get incremental power first, short-term objective. Energy anywhere, we can get it because the energy is not enough,” he said in an interview.

“Five thousand megawatts, which was our peak production in February this year, is not enough for a country of over 100 million people. We will get it from everywhere — from gas, solar, hydro from nuclear and biomass.”

Nigeria, which currently generates less than 5,000MW of power, is billed to raise its energy profile to at least 6,000MW by the end of 2016.

[News]_Rottwieler Attacks Dutch Toddler And Got Him Injured

A 3-year-old baby got badly injured when four rottweilers attacked him on Sportlaan in the Drenthe town of Nieuw-Buinen on Tuesday afternoon.

He was rushed to the hospital with severe bite wounds.
According to the police, the boy was playing in the dog owner’s garden when the dogs escaped and jumped over a fence between the dog house and the garden.

The dogs bit the boy.

The owner of the home sped to help the boy, aided by neighbors.
“I heard a woman scream and different dog barks than usual”, an upstairs neighbor, who sped to get the dogs off the toddler, said to newspaper AD afterwards.

“I ran downstairs, put on my work shoes, grabbed a crowbar and an aluminum tube and ran to the garden.” He pushed and punched the dogs off the boy while his wife called 112. Eventually he managed to grab the child and run into the street with him.
The child was rushed to the University Medical Center Groningen. His current condition is unknown. Other children were also playing int he garden at the time. They were unhurt.

In consultation with the animal police, the municipality and the dogs’ owner, it was decided that the four dogs should be put down. Two dogs that weren’t involved in the incident were taken to the shelter for a behavioral study, which will reveal what will happen to them.

[News]_Nine Injured As Freight Train Crashes Into Bus In Germany

A freight train Lost control into a bus in Osnabrück on Wednesday morning, leaving several people seriously injured, local media report.

The crash happened right away around 8.15am when the train hit the back of the bus which stood stationary on the tracks, according to the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (NOZ).

NOZ initially reported that the bus was a school bus, but later updated the article to describe it as a rail replacement bus. The collision took place within the vicinity of a train station at Melle-Westerhausen.

The bus had stopped to let people out but still had its rear end on the tracks. When a passenger alerted the driver to the oncoming train, he tried to close the doors.

But when they failed to close he was unable to move the vehicle, NOZ reports.

Emergency services have arrived at the scene and have deployed helicopters among other vehicles.
Police told Spiegel Online that nine people have been reported injured, two of whom were seriously injured.

The train driver was among those taken to hospital.
